Ok, bob mentioned using Long.doubleToLongBits() (and then promptly said nevermind).
Why?
Because in GWT when you hit compile it takes your Java and turns it into Javascript. The Long.doubleToLongBits() method calls a native method which is not available in Javascript.
When converting Java to GWT you need to keep in mind the limitations. No Java.io, very limited reflection and you are writing code that will execute on a client, so no JDBC connections to your database or opening sockets to other servers (amongst other things).
I've updated the above code to take into account zero length remainders because I was getting errors on numbers like 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 etc...

You should use the built-in methods Long.longBitsToDouble() and Long.doubleToLongBits()
[ed: bob, retracted this comment, but I think I'll add it to the post because it highlights a difficult part of the GWT AMF code]

Hey Russ & team,
Yes you did indeed see this coming & I think the solution you offered us has been fantastic! we will continue to migrate features to HTML5 & see the Hybrid site as it exists today slowly transform more towards the HTML5 platform.
Had we reacted to this situation prematurely the cost to us would have been staggering, you & your team kept us informed of the developments & made recommendations & advised when you felt the time was right, the result has been a smooth transition & potentially Huge savings of both money & time for us. cheers!
Interesting post Russ. Flex is definitely a mature technology in all senses of the word - it is mature in that it is stable and working across almost all our clients computers (the importance of which cannot be underestimated!!), but it is also mature in the sense that it is no longer considered on the cutting edge. I look forward to having all our applications built in HTML5- though certainly not looking forward to the cross-browser compatibility issues! It's great that you and your company keep on top of the trends and technology.

Joshua,

Well picked up. You could definitely swap out the iteration to loop over paragraphs. This code sample is a bit lacking to what we have in live implementations and many improvements have been made on it since.

Cheers,

In refreshBullets(), you don't really need to iterate over all the TextFlowLines though, do you? Why not just loop through the paragraphs using a while loop and getNextParagraph(). Looks to me like your code will overwrite multiple bullets (as many as there are lines in a paragraph) ...
